Laurios asked:

My MD has just bought a fruit machine and has put it in our office, for people to use. Is this legal?
We just wanted to make sure, because I thought you had to have a licence to have one in a pub etc.
Oh and when I say Fruit Machine….I do mean a Gambling Machine! thanks
My MD will keep the profits.

Sniff My Buns March 18, 2009

Why would you care? Why not just enjoy it? It’s never smart to get your bosses in trouble lol.

Phenomenon March 19, 2009

IF the fruit its making is cocaine then no

Lola March 22, 2009

That sells fresh fruit? Why would it be illegal?

enchanted March 23, 2009

Yes. Why wouldn’t it be?

ok you should have given the additional details to start with- now your questioning the legality makes more sense.
Really it depends on what state you are in.
-In Texas for instance you are allowed to have them as long as they do not actually pay out in cash money.
In Louisiana it is perfectly fine

Oliver C March 26, 2009

Well people work in casinos doen’t they?

Mrs. S March 28, 2009

A fruit machine? Like a vending machine with fruit in it? I don’t see how it could be illegal. He’s promoting health and fruit is good for you, better than a candy machine or a potato chip machine….

How is it any different than a coffee machine. I can’t see why it wouldn’t be legal.

A gambling machine no you would need a license.

Roberto A March 30, 2009

Yes it is Legal to have a vending machine in your Office.

webdesignsperu April 1, 2009

No. why would it be? coffee machines are more dangerous… and it’s not ilegal

machotacofriends April 4, 2009

Don’t go being a tatle-tale! Be a rebel and just eat the fruit!

Ted April 5, 2009

Is the fruit machine harmful in some way?

phantomgal April 8, 2009

Why not? Fruit is good for you, better than those snack machines with all that trans fat that WILL kill you eventually. They should outlaw snack machines – since there are so many obese people with diabetes.

Angela April 11, 2009

Why wouldn’t it be??????

elysialaw April 12, 2009

Does it actually payout? Who keeps the profits, if so?

Everywhere I am aware of you need a license to have one, if it is a machine that actually pays out, but I do suppose it varies from place to place.

Based on your use of the terms “Fruit Machine” and “Pub” I assume you are from the UK? I always understood that the gambling machines there were regulated, licensed and rented by the government. (I am from Canada, so I could be wrong.)

If your boss is promoting gambling at the work place and even worse, profiting off of it, my vote is that you should get another job. What’s next, an opium den instead of a coffee lounge?

Edit: What’s an MD, if you don’t mind my asking? To me that means a Dr. which would make promoting gambling at work all the much worse for a licensed doctor!

Yes, most refrigerated vending machines do offer certain types of fruit. Apples, oranges, salads, and yogurt, milk, juices, just to name a few. Make sure the “vending company” monitors these machines frequently. If you see something that may have gone bad, call the phone number to the vender on the machine, eat and be healthy.
