I’m newly pregnant and trying to eat better. This morning I had a fresh juice drink made with a whole apple, a cucumber, 2 stalks of celery and half a pineapple. Does drinking this juice “count” as a fruit or veg serving, since the fiber, pulp etc stays in the juice machine?

why yes of course it does as long as its real fruit. It should say on it how many servings of fruit it counts for.

As long as it is not from a chemically created powder…

Since it seems as though you are doing the juicing yourself, and KNOW what they contain… YES, each 6oz(?) glass counts as one serving of fruits and veggies.

Now for the fun part…if you like baking and cooking, you can use the pulp and fiber from the juicer as flavouring and/or filler for the things you make!

Yes, it counts. And you would have been much better served having a little protein with your fruits. Also eating the WHOLE fruit provides you with bulk which you will need as prenatals (iron) can give you constipation. The whole fruits also take longer to break down, thus are more complex carbs. The juice qualifies as more simple…higher in sugar and it can boost your blood sugar a little too much, with out some comp/carbs and protein to counter it. If you have to watch your weight, egg white omelet is great, but whole egg is nice to boost aminos and enzymes. Smoothies with fruit, egg white or protein powder yogurt can be really good when you eat a little yogurt and granola, too. Use the celery with a little peanut butter or pimento cheese as a lowcal/protein snack that is crunchy. You have to do a lot of continutal chewing which is very satisfying for the need to crunch. Many ways to skin a cat.

While there are plenty of vitamins in fresh fruits and vegies that are not processed, minerals should be supplementd. You should be getting 2000 mg calcium and 1000 mg magnesium daily. Calcium is need to build the baby’s bones, and usually you suffer by having tooth decay and broken bones, broken nails, brittle hair as the body seeks to rush its stores to the baby. This is imperitive. There is tremendous need now proven for other things such as folic acid to prevent open spinal deformaties.

Read, read, read and listen to your doctor about what you must have. Take prenatals.
